Neck pain has become one of the most common issues in modern life. What used to be occasional discomfort now affects how people work, sleep, focus, and handle daily stress. Long hours of sitting and constant screen use place ongoing strain on the spine, muscles, and nervous system.
Poor posture and prolonged sitting can disrupt spinal alignment, increase tension on nerves, and add stress to the body. Whether it’s from looking down at a phone, working at a computer, or staying seated too long, the neck often takes the biggest impact.
Recent research published in BMC Public Health found a strong link between prolonged sitting and neck pain. The more time spent sedentary, the higher the risk. Women and working adults were especially more likely to develop neck pain from extended sitting and increased screen use.
Sitting for at least four hours a day was linked to a significantly higher risk of neck pain. Among all screen related activities, cellphone use showed the strongest connection due to the strain caused by constantly looking down at a device. Computer use also increased the risk, especially for people working long hours at a desk.
These findings show how modern habits are putting constant stress on the body. Daily behaviors like prolonged sitting, excessive phone use, and lack of movement can gradually contribute to chronic neck pain and reduced mobility over time.
Limiting sitting time, improving posture, taking regular movement breaks, and supporting spinal health may help reduce neck strain and improve long term comfort and function.
